How to Measure a Refrigerator or Freezer Door Gasket
If you’re unsure how to measure your refrigerator or freezer door gasket, you’re not alone. Getting accurate measurements is one of the most common challenges our customers face — and the most important step to ensure a perfect fit. As the industry leader in replacement refrigeration gaskets, CoolerGaskets.com makes it simple to measure, match, and order the exact gasket your cooler or freezer needs.
1. Measure the Old Gasket (Not the Door Frame)
Always measure the existing gasket, not the door or cabinet opening. This ensures your new gasket fits properly and seals tightly.
Use a tape measure or rigid ruler and record dimensions in inches, rounding to the nearest 1/8".
- Width: Measure from outside edge to outside edge across the top and bottom of the gasket.
- Height: Measure from outside edge to outside edge along the sides.
- If the gasket looks stretched, warped, or misshapen, take multiple measurements and use the average for best accuracy.
Pro Tip: For the most reliable results, remove the old gasket and lay it flat before measuring.
2. Identify the Gasket Profile Type
The profile refers to the gasket’s shape and mounting style — where and how it connects to your cooler door.
To identify your profile:
- Remove a small section of the old gasket to view the mounting edge.
- Compare it to the detailed diagrams on our Gaskets by Profile page.
- Pay close attention to the mounting type (dart, push-in, screw-in, magnetic insert, etc.) — this determines compatibility.
If your gasket has a dart (a ridge that fits into a track): Measure from the center of one dart to the center of the opposite dart, rather than edge to edge.
3. Account for Warping, Compression, or Shrinkage
Over time, gaskets naturally shrink, warp, or flatten due to temperature changes and wear. To get an accurate fit:
- Measure both sides (top vs. bottom, left vs. right).
- If measurements differ slightly, use the largest value for each dimension.
This ensures your replacement gasket fits snugly and seals properly without leaving air gaps.
4. Check Door Style and Count
If your appliance has double doors, split gaskets, or stacked compartments, measure each gasket separately. Even similar-looking doors can vary slightly in size.
5. Verify Before You Order
Once you have your:
- Width and height measurements
- Profile type
- Mounting style
Head over to our Gaskets by Profile page to find your perfect match. Each profile includes diagrams, dimensions, and product details to help you order confidently.
